They made everything easy for me! Even when I lost faith in the car accident where a drunk driver hit me, they helped me through every process. They were quick as they could be and made everything easier for me while being in the process of my move to Japan for the Navy, full time student, and planning my own wedding. I appreciated the help. Thank you!”

I had the pleasure of allowing Mr. Leland Malchow to represent my case and I would recommend 10star rating if possible. Not only was Mr. Leland very professional and knowledgeable, he also took the time to listen to my frustrations about my situation. He offered a listening ear, as well as some kind motivational advice. Our relationship has been through business only but I would extend a hand to him and the law firm from here on out. Thank you all and God Bless."

Can You Drive Golf Carts in Hilton Head Island?

Yes—South Carolina law allows golf carts to be driven on certain public roads, and Hilton Head Island supports golf cart use within strict limits. These rules are enforced by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement, including community-specific security services.

But the answer comes with big asterisks.

1. Legal Requirements to Drive a Golf Cart in South Carolina

To legally operate a golf cart in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina requires:

  • A valid driver’s license (no learners permits)
  • A golf cart permit from the SC DMV (you’ll need proof of insurance and ownership)
  • Insurance coverage meeting state minimums
  • Age 16 or older to drive

Your golf cart must also have:

  • Headlights and reflectors if used during daylight saving months (when allowed until 8 p.m.)
  • Working brakes and steering
  • Rearview mirror and warning label if provided by the manufacturer

2. Where You Can Drive a Golf Cart in Hilton Head

The SC DMV and Hilton Head rental companies are very clear:

  • Only on roads with posted speeds of 35 mph or less
  • You may cross higher-speed roads at intersections only
  • Stay within 4 miles of the address listed on your golf cart permit (usually your rental property or residence)
  • Carts are not allowed on bike paths, sidewalks, beaches, or private trails unless explicitly permitted

In Hilton Head Island, many resort communities have their own rules too:

  • Sea Pines: Golf carts are allowed but must be rented from Sea Pines–approved vendors
  • Palmetto Dunes: No golf carts allowed outside the security gate
  • Shipyard and Port Royal: Carts generally allowed for residents with proper registration
  • Forest Beach and off-resort neighborhoods: Check HOA or rental company rules

Callout: Always ask your rental agency or HOA about community-specific cart rules. Violations can lead to fines—or even towing.

3. When You Can Drive

Golf carts are strictly limited to daylight hours:

  • Standard Time (fall/winter): 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Daylight Saving Time (spring/summer): 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Even during daylight saving, you must turn on headlights while driving. Operating a golf cart after hours is a violation of state law.

4. Follow All Traffic Laws

A golf cart is a motor vehicle under South Carolina law. That means:

  • No texting while driving
  • Obey all stop signs, yield signs, and speed limits
  • Drive on the right side of the road and stay in a single file
  • No driving under the influence (DUI laws apply)

If you’re stopped for a traffic violation on a golf cart, it goes on your driving record.

5. Safety Tips for Enjoying Your Ride

Most golf cart accidents happen when drivers:

  • Let underage or unlicensed drivers operate the cart
  • Make sharp turns at high speeds
  • Carry too many passengers
  • Ride after dark

Keep your ride safe:

  • Stick to two passengers per row
  • Buckle up if seatbelts are installed
  • Avoid distractions—no loud music, phones, or alcohol
  • Drive defensively around cars, pedestrians, and cyclists
