Hilton Head Island is known for its beautiful beaches, upscale resorts, and natural charm. But after sunset, that charm comes with a hidden danger. The island’s strict commitment to low lighting creates real safety risks for residents and visitors—especially on unlit roads.
Why Is Hilton Head So Dark at Night?
The island enforces strict lighting policies to limit light pollution, preserve its low-impact design, and protect local wildlife. While these rules help maintain the night sky’s natural beauty, they’ve also made it harder to see pedestrians and road hazards in critical areas like Bluffton Parkway and South Forest Beach Drive.
“That’s not what we are. We’re trying not to be like other tourist spots where you can’t see the nighttime sky,” said Town Manager Marc Orlando, explaining the town’s resistance to brighter lighting.
But when safety is compromised, the cost can be devastating.
When Darkness Turns Deadly
Inadequate lighting has contributed to many serious and fatal accidents on Hilton Head Island. Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner has described lighting as a major factor in nighttime crashes. He supports targeted upgrades along both major roads and neighborhood streets.
One tragic example is the 2013 death of Jenny Mercer, killed in a hit-and-run while walking along South Forest Beach Drive. Her mother, Diana Mercer Imler, believes lighting could have saved her life.
“Had there been lighting there, maybe the driver would have seen her,” Imler said. “It’s so dangerous that we don’t have proper lighting, and everyone knows it.”
Is It Time to Reevaluate Hilton Head’s Lighting?
Local leaders like Councilman Bill Harkins are beginning to push for changes.
“For the interest of public safety it deserves taking a look,” he said. “With new technology, lighting could focus on a prescribed area.”
Directional LED lights and shielded lamps now offer precision lighting that keeps nearby homes dark while protecting public walkways and roadways.
Lighting at intersections and crosswalks can reduce nighttime pedestrian crashes by up to 42%, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
What the Data Shows
Without proper lighting, drivers face more danger—especially in tourist-heavy seasons when many are unfamiliar with local roads. Poor visibility mixed with distracted or impaired driving increases the risk of deadly accidents.
The Federal Highway Administration confirms that smart lighting dramatically improves safety. Focused light at key locations gives drivers more time to see and react to pedestrians.
